Split with George but, trust me, you'll only be wearing
out one side of this vinyl. The dream in question involves the Mary
Chain's "Upside Down" without quite so much distortion, a more obvious
Brian Wilson fetish, a super huge fuzz bass and a super reverb vocal.
And the warp, of course. This is catchier than Chinese Flu. |

... Southall Riot's home-recorded track is a bit rough
around the edges, but dig those harmonies! That chorus! That blissed
out guitar solo! Bloody great. |

.The B-side however, is pure pop. Southall Riot do
the kind of sloppy, Beach Boys-influenced pop that only the Summer
Hits could pull off. I'm going to hunt down everything that they ever
did. I hope there's more. |

... For me though, the prize is clearly Southall Riot.
I really really like their song, and will look for more stuff by them.
They sound like an Elephant 6 band if Elephant 6 bands used early
My Bloody Valentine instead of Beach Boys/Beatles as a starting point.
Really Boss! I want to hear it again and again |

.Southall Riot sound like mod fans. There's a bit of
the Who in here and a nod in the direction of "My Mind's Eye" by the
Small Faces. I suppose that if this had been given the major label
treatment to polish off the rough edges, I may have not liked this,
but there's plenty of splashiness to make it pretty good fun. It ends
with a locked groove too. |
